Norma Libby WØKC & Dave Libby KØDCL

David C. Libby, KØDCL (SK), passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Monday, January 25, 2010. He was 68 years old and an ARRL Life Member. As W5YI and ARRL Volunteer Examiners, Dave and his wife Norma, WØKC, were involved in the testing of literally hundreds of people at several Kansas City metro area testing sites over the past several years. For Dave, it was very important how an Amateur Radio operator conducted themselves on the air. Dave never considered amateur radio a hobby; it was always considered the Amateur Radio Service.

One of Dave’s most memorable moments in amateur radio came when he somehow busted through a pile-up to contact King Hussein, JY1, of Jordan while mobile with his brother traveling by car somewhere between Kansas City and Saint Joseph, Missouri.

In the early seventies, Dave used to combine his love of amateur radio with his love for camping. Dave would often time bring joy to a county hunter’s heart with a QSO and then a QSL card from a rare or much needed county.

Dave was a member of the Raytown Amateur Radio Club and played a major role in several KØGQ Field Day operations. On several occasions, Dave assisted the club in teaching local Boy Scouts about amateur radio for the radio merit badge.

Dave and I talked for many hours on the Raytown repeater about a large variety of issues including antennas, old cars, drag racing, and reminiscing about street cars and the old days which was one of Dave's favorites. The discussions were sometimes very informative and fun! I am sure that a few of you listened in on the Dave and Dave show from time to time. Dave was a great friend and Elder to everyone! He will be missed...
