This photograph was taken at the ARRL Kansas State Convention when the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award was presented to Rebecca by the late ARRL Midwest Director Wade Walstrom WØEJ.

In 2005 Rebecca was awarded the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award for her dedication to the amateur radio service, along with her academic excellence, her emphasis on community service activities and her continued effort to introduce others to amateur radio. Rebecca Rich, KBØVVT, is nineteen years old and a sophomore attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Both of Rebecca’s parents are amateur radio operators. Rebecca became interested in amateur radio while watching her mother study for her amateur radio license. Rebecca’s father developed a computer program to help her mother study amateur radio. Rebecca began playing with the program, and along with help from her parents, she started learning the material. Rebecca earned her Technician Class license when she was seven years old. This accomplishment was overshadowed because she would soon pass all written and code exam requirements, including the 20 word per minute code exam, to earn the Extra Class license when she was just eight years old. Rebecca is proud to tell people that she has been an amateur radio operator for more than half of her life. Rebecca’s 2004 Dayton Youth Forum presentation was entitled “Half My Life In Amateur Radio.”

In 2005, KBØVVT set a new all time record in SS CW operating in the School Club Category:

Thanks for all the PJ2/KB0VVT radio fun that I had on the island of Curacao before and after the ARRL DX Phone contest. It was most likely me or perhaps my mother if you worked a YL at PJ2T during the 2006 ARRL DX Phone contest:

73 and Good DX,

Rebecca Rich KBØVVT

One of the most memorable Kid’s Day experiences that Rebecca has enjoyed was in January 2003 when she operated on the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Rebecca was granted permission to do the operation from John Peters, K1ER, who is trustee of the KH6BB radio club that operates in the radio room aboard the ship. John’s comment in his e-mail was that any 14 year old girl from Kansas City, Missouri who can copy 20 words per minute code can operate aboard the USS Missouri. Generally the radio room aboard the USS Missouri is off limits to the tourists. However, John decided to allow access to the radio room for adults with children touring the ship to see the radio operation and learn something about amateur radio from Rebecca. She assisted the numerous visitors with children touring the USS Missouri radio room during this Kid’s Day event, coaching first time operators, explaining amateur radio and working through interpreters for some of the children. Newspaper and television reporters even showed up and learned a little about amateur radio. During this Kid’s Day event, Rebecca was able make phone contacts using the KH6BB callsign and several CW contacts using her own KBØVVT/KH6 callsign. This day was very exciting and provided a great opportunity to share a hobby Rebecca loves with many new potential operators. Late that evening at our hotel, we received a telephone call from John telling us to turn on the television and watch the local news. It turns out that Rebecca was actually shown on the news operating Kid’s Day. Wow, now that was a Kid’s Day to remember!
